Doctor Who

My cousin is driving up from LA right now for a week's visit after having spent a few days kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. My cousin who's training to be an anesthesiologist (anaesthetist to you Brits) and who took a year out from medical school to be the ship's doctor in a round-the-world yacht race.

My cousin Ruth.

How many of you thought I was talking about a bloke after that first paragraph? It amazes me how many people do, and it also amazes me how often I fall for gender stereotyping myself. I said the same thing to my office, and not one person assumed she was female (including a female doctor who was interning with us).

So, fess up? Did you assume wrong?

I actually assumed it was a woman and didn't consider it could be a man until you mentioned it. But I think it was because of the cousin bit. I have so many female cousins that I automatically think cousin=woman!

I assumed woman once you said the 'driving up to see you for a week' part. Guys don't really do that, do they?

I assumed woman on the sea kayaking and driving to see you - sounds so organized and a lovely way to spend a holiday... Maybe when you tell the story, it's different to how you just wrote it?

But you're completely right. I usually assume all the wretched bankers I speak to are men. The occasional surprise is really lovely.

the funny thing: i assumed it was a woman you were talking about at the beginning of the post, and i was right! maybe it was the 'driving up to see you' part.

I learned in Scandinavia never to assume a thing. My friends were shopworkers, office clerks, welders and engineers!
Actually the only think I do assume is that men design American kitchens. Only someone who never uses one could design such hopeless cabinets!

Sea Kayaking sounds fantastic and well done to your cousin for all her achievements!

My aunt used to Kayak so I thought of her when I read that part... so I don't think I necessarily assumed your cousin was a dude... but I will admit that I was surprised to read the name Ruth.

The medical part didn't get me, it was the kayak stuff and the boating part...

OK, I stand corrected - clearly I need to get my pre-conceived notions out of the 19th Century and join you lot with your pure and gender-neutral minds!!

...in my defence I did get one secret email from someone who leaped to the same conclusions I did, but was too embarrassed at being the odd one out to comment!!
